Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, widely known simply as Socrates, wasn’t just a legendary midfielder for Brazil. He was a thinker, activist, and cultural icon. Beyond his elegant playmaking and leadership on the pitch, he was a medical doctor, a philosopher of life, and a vocal advocate for democracy during Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1980s. He led the “Corinthians Democracy” movement, empowering players to have a say in club decisions, and famously used his platform to champion social and political causes, showing that athletes can be influential citizens as well as sports stars.
